Dmitriev Supporter recognised

Russia’s Association of Theatrical Critics has announced its awards for 2021. The play of the year is “Mozart’s Don Giovanni: The Dress Rehearsal”, written by Dmitry Krymov.

Their Person of the Year is Lia AKHEDZHEKOVA, People’s Actor of Russia, actress with the Sovremennik Theatre. She was chosen “for her consistent and bold public defence of human values and professional dignity”.

Five years to the day …

Today marks the fifth anniversary of Yury DMITRIEV’s arrest in 2016. At the city court in Petrozavodsk his third trial behind closed doors on the same charges is rapidly approaching its end.

The defence is giving its closing statement and then Dmitriev will himself pronounces his Final Words to the court.

Trial to end on 14 or 15 December

When hearings resume on 13 December the defence (represented by Victor Anufriev and Roman Masalyov) will make its closing statement. Yury Dmitriev will then address the court and also pronounce his Last Words at this trial. Word from Moscow is that the trial may finish as early as Tuesday 14 December.

Prosecution demands 15 years

In its closing statement the prosecution at Yury DMITRIEV’s third trial on the same charges in the past five years has demanded that his term of imprisonment in a strict-regime penal colony be increased.

“Free Yury Dmitriev!”

This familiar poster now carries another demand: “Hands off Memorial!”

It wants him to serve a total of 15 years as opposed to the 13 years and six months imposed last September by Karelia’s High Court.
